The Blue Sky Project [27 Sep 2008|07:13am]
[ mood | pleased ]

Just wanted to let you all know about this CD called "The Blue Sky Project." It has 7 tracks, some are folk-y and others are instrumental. All proceeds from the CD are going to benefit Music in Schools Today, a charity that supports music education in public schools (www.mustcreate.org). The songs are all used in Clorox commercials, which is how I found them -- don't tell me you don't love the music in the mermaid and pirate commercials! :)

So if you like the music, and like to support music education, give it a listen. It's only $6.93 on iTunes.

Update/8 On the Rant Scale [16 Sep 2008|03:20pm]
[ mood | bored ]

Like many, I find politics interesting. I love looking back in history to see how we progressed (or, in some cases, regressed) in our thinking regarding how our societies are governed. I suppose it is simply more civilized to throw mud at your opponent and insult his/her family or his/her choice of words than to lop off their head. Maybe.

I hate political mudslinging, because it reminds me of arguments I had with my brothers when I was, oh, EIGHT. Mindless, superficial arguments that mean NOTHING.

What spurned this? The remarks Republicans are making regarding Joe Biden's statement on lowering taxes, when he mentions that Americans need to be able to go out and "buy a toaster." They're taking that out to the field and attempting to hit it out of the ballpark and -- at risk of offending the legions that protested "Tropic Thunder" -- that's retarded. Maybe it was a turn of phrase, an attempt at making light of a serious situation. Or, perhaps more likely, exemplifying how serious our economic situation is when it's breaking the budget to go out and buy something that warms up your Eggos.

It makes me feel like there's this double-mirrored room full of dozens of elementary school children saying, "Pssssh, buy a toaster? Who really cares about a friggin' toaster!" Top Republicans latch onto it and drag it all over the pages of Yahoo, all over MSNBC, and Fox News touts it as genius.

Now don't misunderstand me -- I've illustrated only one incident in a drowning sea of many. Democrats are just as guilty of this as Republicans. But the crux of this issue, the reason it really, REALLY bothers me, is that if these things did not hold clout nor work to influence policymakers and voters, they wouldn't do it. This means that people actually PAY ATTENTION and LEND CREDIBILITY to these things!

And of course, now I'm talking about it and spreading it all along, like a disease. Even though I'm speaking against it -- there's no such thing as negative publicity. I'm ashamed of myself. ;P

In other news, the new-ish place is great! Max is a pain without Indy to entertain him, so we're greatly looking forward to the new friend he'll have in November. We hope they get along just as well as he and Indy did.

But other than that, there's really no news. The Gators are off to a great season, beating Miami for the first time since 1985. Of course, Miami is rebuilding this year from their past few years of utter craptastic-ness. Their defense is gonna rock it, and Marve looks solid at the QB position. We'll see how they do this year.

And...that's about it. I'll have to think up some more stuff to share soon.

Stolen From Mickie! [10 Jul 2008|07:37pm]
[ mood | curious ]

So, Miss Mouse...I think mine is accurate-ish, too. ^__^ Of course, I used my original name and not my married one.

My name promotes optimism, inspiration, and enthusiasm. It feels cheerful, outgoing, and charming. This name represents self-expression and communication skills. Its upward energy is a sign of tremendous creativity and all artistic endeavors are empowered by its vibration. My name attracts just about everyone. It carries great public relation and communication skills, and an innate ability to charm the most cynical folks.

However, it lacks focus and discipline, can be a "happy-go-lucky spendthrift", and can give the impression of flightiness and instability.

My most positive characteristics: Upbeat, creative, capable communicator, inspiring, uplifting. Has sense of humor, draws creative and passionate people.

My most negative characteristics: Scattered energy, difficulty in finishing projects, unreliable.

Ark. Academic Conference to Examine 'Buffy,' 'Angel' and 'Firefly'

By JON GAMBRELL, Associated Press Writer
2 hours, 35 minutes ago

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Aristotle. Nietzsche. Buffy?

The blonde heroine of the campy television series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," as well as other works by director and writer Josh Whedon, will be the focus of a three-day academic conference held at Henderson State University beginning Friday. The television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar won cult fame and critical praise during its seven seasons on The WB and UPN networks.

Since it ended, the series has spawned enough academic books on the philosophy surrounding the roles of friendship and feminism to fill a bookshelf stretching 15 feet long at the college in Arkadelphia, said Kevin Durand, an associate professor of philosophy at the school.

"It has staying power," Durand said. "It's like I tell my students in philosophy a lot of times: We're not so much about necessarily finding all the answers as wanting to ask better questions. 'Buffy,' I think, does that. 'Buffy' never really leaves you with nice, pat answers. You have even more questions than when you started."

Durand said more than 90 academic papers will be discussed at the conference. He expects about 150 people to attend and discuss the vampire slayer and Whedon's other works, like the television series "Firefly" and "Angel." Another point of discussion will be a lesser-known part of Whedon's work — his screenplay for the hit animated film "Toy Story."

Among the papers: "Buffy and Feminism," "Buffy and Identity," "Gender Stereotypes and the Image of Domesticity in 'Firefly,'" "'Firefly:' The Illusive Safety of Big Damn Heroes" and a Durand favorite by a British scholar, "Hero's Journey, Heroine's Return: Buffy, Eurydice and the Orpheus Myth."

"That one just sounds cool," he said.

Durand, who contributed an academic paper at each of the two previous Buffy conferences, often focuses on how power plays into the "Buffy" series. He said much of the fictional heroine's strength came from others and her willingness to work with friends in her fight against creatures of the night.

So... [27 May 2008|04:12pm]
[ mood | mellow ]

...I suppose I should update you all with life in general, yes? Because, as some so justly accuse, it's been awhile.

Married life is just fine and dandy, thanks for asking. Greg and I get that question all the time, and our practiced response is something along the lines of, "Eeeeh, I guess it's okay..." as we look at each other less than fondly. But seriously, it's lovely.

Greg, myself, and twilight_melody are moving! She has posted more about this than I have (frankly, she's just got more free time at work!), but here's the sitch if she's not on your FL. We're moving into a townhome quite close to my workplace -- my plan is to bike it, though I think a lot of people are taking bets on if that will really happen. I maintain I will, so THERE. It's 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 1555 square feet, with a screened in patio and TWO WHOLE BALCONIES. It has a 1-car garage and a reserved parking space out front, and cable and internet come included. Max and newly-born Indy will have room to run around and play with one another.

The new job is going quite swimmingly. I'm a bit bored sometimes, and I sit on my behind most of the day, but it's so nice to be able to go home at 5:00pm and have my weekends. I'm so much more relaxed now. Trust me, friends and family will tell you so. ;) No more brides, brides' moms, brides' sisters, brides' aunts, brides' counsins...ahhhh, peace on Earth does exist.

Okay, maybe that was a little dramatic. Most of my brides were wonderful, it's just those handful of rotten apples that stick out in your brain for the rest of your life.

Jenn and Ryan's wedding was a crazy weekend but a TOTAL blast!! That dress was the most fun-dancing-dress EVER. The DJ was awesome, right up to par with my favorite MC. And despite the couple of snags, I don't think it could have been better.

Also, I ate enough after-dinner mints to BE dinner.

So, I know there's more, but this feels (spiritually) like a good stopping point. And speaking of spirituality, there's new development on that front as well. But we'll talk about that another time.

I hope everyone's doing wonderfully!!

Randomness [02 Feb 2008|08:40pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

Friends, I have been reading all your stuffs! I just haven't been posting like a good little Sarah. I'm sorry for that, and part of my New Year's Resolution...yes, I know I'm a month late...is to keep up to date with all my friends lives and let them know that 1) I do exist and 2) I do care about them!

Things at the job are a little hectic and stressful right now, as they are every busy season. Now that Mike isn't at the shop to absorb all of our boss' stress and let him vent, he's been jetting his steam on everyone else. It's getting tense, and I just hope that we can all band together and diffuse it before anyone does anything rash. Myself included. I'm close to sure we'll all make it, but sometimes I wonder when one of us will just break, walk out that door, and never come back. I wonder if he realizes exactly what he's SAYING sometimes.

Speaking of work, we had a trunk show last weekend, and a great sales representative from one of our designer houses came down to help us sell dresses! She was so sweet, and used to work for another designer that we carry. The bridal industry is such a small industry compared to many, so everyone knows everyone at just about every line. I've had this hetero-lady crush on one of the models for the line she used to work for, and now I know her name! So when I see her in the books and on the website I can pretend I sort of know her. Go see her here!.

So pretty...

Anyhow.

The family is doing well. My youngest brother continues to amaze me. He's grown up so much since his punk basketball days when he was in middle school. He's always been a good kid, but he's starting to get that elevated, adult-ish viewpoint on quite a lot of things. I've been missing my family since I got married, and when I go over to visit sometimes I feel like nothing has changed. Except that there's a exercise machine in 'my' room. Which, as everyone knows, would NEVER happen.

A local husband/wife photography team, who have been in our expo for years and done a lot for our business, photographed the store about a month or so ago. Our boss asked me to be the 'model bride' for the photo shoot. Some of the outer and inner store shots are up, but I don't know if/when the bride and friends shot will go up. If it's displayed, I'm starting a portfolio. ;P Only kidding. I'm 8" too short and pounds too heavy. But I look pretty good in a wedding dress.

But anyhow, the other ladies at work were throwing around an idea to take sexy photos for the men in our life. We called them and set up a time, and all of us drank champagne, got naked, and had a grand time. Of course all the other girls' shots are MUCH racier than mine, but I think the hubby will like them. And my perm looks wicked good. Did I mention I got a perm?

Katie and I are planning a trip to Vegas in December, funded primarily by our tax returns and this as-of-yet ghostly rebate check that the government says we sorta kinda might get. If anyone has any requests for any souvenirs, or if you want me to gamble a few dollars for you (I'll bring you the profits, I promise!) let me know. If you ever want to go to Vegas, look at the Winter months -- from my research, those are the best priced dates!

Greg's got a potential new job on the horizon, but I can't really say much about it just yet. He says it sounds like something he'd absolutely love to do, and I know he's getting so tired of Housekeeping. The management company change-over has made it more difficult for him to move anywhere else anytime soon since the individual departments no longer really have control over who they hire. At any rate, this other option will pay him twice what he makes now and give him conventional hours and paid time off. And he gets to do what he loves.

If he doesn't go for it, I'm going to kick him in the ass. ;-)

Photo After-Session [18 Nov 2007|05:00pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

Greg and I had our 'after session' today with our photographers. It's just a chance for them and us to get some cool pictures in our wedding attire without the wedding. Since Greg rented his tux, we went ahead and just picked something out from the closet, while I wore the whole wedding getup again. It was super fun -- we went to downtown Alachua and took some cool rustic pics, as well as taking some pictures on train tracks and on a dirt road. To culminate the event, we took some awesome photos in a laundromat. There's this great one of me in the laundry cart. I don't know how I managed to get in there, but I bet it turns out awesome. We had a great time with the photographers!

Ah, Memories... [09 Nov 2007|07:26pm]

Two musical acts that were hugely popular when I was a budding teenager have new videos out.

Spice Girls -- "Headlines." The song is all right, the video is idiotic. Victoria Beckham in some sort of dominatrix underwear, Melanie B. and Geri practically topless? Girl Power what?

Backstreet Boys -- "Inconsolable." Ah, BSB. You will always have my heart, even though you are Kevin-less now.

[ mood | inquisitive ]

Who has pictures??? I need pictures! My photos won't be ready from my photographers for about a month or so because they've been booked all of October, and I'm going through withdrawal!

Here's the only one I have -- it's from David's other half, Christi, and I can only see my back. ;-)

And Jess Meith -- you look EVIL in this picture! Ryan looks like either he thinks it's hilarious, or he's trying to look nonchalant but he's really scared.

EDIT!! I just saw Miss Meith's post -- am looking through ALL the pictures and I will post my favorites here, too!!
